Over 200 teachers to take concealed handgun class today in Utah.

Utah Shooting Sports Council
said it normally has a dozen teachers annually for instruction required to legally carry a concealed weapon in public places. The state's leading gun lobby decided to offer teachers the training at no charge to encourage turnout after the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre.
Organisers who initially capped attendance at 200 were exceeding that number by today and scrambling to accommodate an overflow crowd.
That was fast. Turns out 2 states allow concealed carry into schools. Utah and Kansas. Not Texas? Say it ain't so! And where are all the Utah/Kansas school shootings if concealed carry on campus is so dangerous? Why are gun-free school zones like Connecticut chosen as the shooting location?

Gun control doesn't mean that guns won't get into the hands of criminals. You think they buy them off the street, or out of the trunk of some guys car, with a legal permit?

Gun control laws don't affect criminals IN ANY WAY. All it does is leave tax paying, law abiding citizens defenseless. You're afraid of guns, because you don't understand them in anyway. Sorry Colorado has shitty concealed weapon laws, but guess what
the crazed Killers like the one in Connecticut last week are Crazy, they have nothing to do with LEGAL gun owners. They DON’T obey the Laws! They don’t obey any laws. Some of the worst mass shootings in history have taken place in countries with extreme "restrictive" gun laws. The bad guy still got the guns. Look at New York for example, they have just about the toughest gun laws in the country, and still they have people killing each other almost every day in Harlem.
Guns are the reason you can walk around free every single day. They are the reason we won two World Wars. They the reason your Grand Father lived to see another day, after being thrown in the middle of bullets hurdling across beaches while innocent people around him died. They're the reason he made it home to his wife, after years of pain and loneliness, just so he could conceive you—an ungrateful victim of the media hype machine. Guns DON'T kill people; in fact, they just sit there and DO NOTHING, until an unstable moron like John Holmes decides he wants to shoot up a movie theater.
If we are to follow the lame-brain ideas of you Libs, why don't we get rid of everything, and anything relating to weapons, or anything else that could kill people or that could be used to hurt people if put in the hands of someone that had intent to do so, and start with, hunting knives, steak knives, butter knives, baseball bats, the Major League Baseball since they promotes baseball bats, video games, cars, boxing gloves and box cutters. And why not put all Rappers, Football and Basketball players in jail while we are at it, after all they are mostly all sociopaths as well. Look at the crime statistics among professional football and basketball players. A bit of research on this topis resulted in this statistic:
“In 2010, the NFL experienced 507 arrests of its players”

And by the way, to you Liberals, I have read the posts here before and let me say that you are extremely ignorant... Just like most of the other PROGRESSIVE’S that post here.. Lastly, just as you don't like the "crazy right-winger" talking about guns I don't like your bat-crap left wing ideas either.

Yeah, twas a pleasant surprise when I moved to Utah. My concern regarded campus carry (college). Also, you can carry a loaded (one in the chamber) pistol in your vehicle, open carry (with one in the chamber only with a permit to carry however, but I can jack a round faster than might be thought), and conceal carry on your own property (to include within your vehicle and on the property of folk who allow it, that being one in the chamber).

As to why no shootings? Infamy doesn't exist for those who get shot by pulling out a gun and not making it past a few steps. They don't even make the news. Which makes me wonder why. More of those making the news might make a real difference. Crime is beautifully low, all around, here. Is a tv really worth being shot and not even having a chance at a civil suit about it? Heh... Loves me some Utah.

I'm still working on my permit. But the bum ticker is a real pain when it comes to doing complicated, multistep, things. Usually that is easy here, just not in all cases. Bleh... Working on it.

There's been some clamouring for 'skilled' gun carriers vs 'unskilled' or 'novice' gun carriers in schools.

I've heard that the 'skilled' gun people train every day, day in day out, year in, year out, etc. and are far superior than a 'shake and bake' gun owner, who is talked through how to shoot a revolver by the gun dealer.

Bunk.

Any idiot can use a revolver to great effect. Load it, point it at the bad guy, pull the trigger. Then pull it again if the bad guy is still standing. Repeat if necessary.

Sure, a shooting a few rounds down range can get you familiar with the process, such as loading, reloading, recoil and noise, etc. Once you have pulled the trigger a few times and hit a target or two, you are good to go for life.

But it's like riding a bike: You don't need to get on your Schwinn each and every day lest you forget how to do it.

Fredd,

+1

Further, there is something that comes over someone when they or others are in danger. It reminds me of when the bible discusses that we shouldn't worry about our words in tough situations, the Holy Spirit will guide us... I like to think that extends to the barrel of a right intending person's firearm. At least with a cursory education in the basic processes of firing a firearm.

On a national level, we should get rid of the teaching certificate requirement (which is just more indoctrination from leftists) and require all teachers to get CCW certification instead. Yay for Utah.

Amen. In the words of Gen. George Patton, 'when you put your hand into a bunch of goo that a moment before was your best friend's face, you'll know what to do.'

Call it guidance from the Holy Spirit, call it a gut reaction, and for some attribute the training they received or even simple muscle memory; whatever you feel the need to call it, when the poop hits the fan you will indeed know what to do.

We teach safe sex in schools, we should also teach gun safety. My Dad took care of that when my brother and I were 7 and 8. (I know appalling.)

Utah has been this way a long time.

Anyway, I prefer Arizona's Open Carry law. Put a gun in your back pocket, or hanging off your belt. No problemo.

This really is black and white. And mind boggling. Like your Chicago # 1 in gun control and # 1 is personal attack/murder crime. knock, knock knock-hello people-anyone in there?? Sadly not enough.

PS - And Women? Forget the kickboxing nonsense, get a conceal carry and a weapon.
