Outrage! Teen commits suicide after forced marriage to rapist

16-year-old Amina Filali swallowed rat poison after enduring 5 months of beatings at the hands of her rapist/husband. She had been accosted and raped on the street by a stranger in Morocco at the age of 15. She did not tell her parents for 2 months, according to her father. When she complained and the family reported the rape, the Moroccan legal system suggested marriage as a way of preserving the family "honor". The rapist initially refused to marry her, then relented in order to avoid the 10 to 20 year prison sentence for raping a minor. Internet activists in Morocco are outraged and are trying to get Article 475 of the penal code removed. This is a law that allows kidnappers to avoid prosecution by marrying their victims.
