"I've seen...bad men do good things"-Cowboys and Aliens

I saw this movie today. A fun little romp. That was one of the lines. I was reminded of it just now as I looked at the top stories, and I saw that Charlie Sheen rescued Brooke Mueller, his ex wife, from a Mexican rehab facility. He was worried about her health and had her flown by private jet up to his rehab specialists in the U.S. I think what he did was thoughtful and sweet. Just proves that nobody is all good or all bad.

It has, finally, to my mind, evolved on that issue. To put it bluntly, humans aren't capable of being good or evil, only of choosing one of those paths. The greater level we can achieve in one of those only shows how capable we are of just the opposite. We can only choose the direction we take, not the path left too us nor even always (or ever) the actual outcomes. Face the Sun and see or face the darkness and pretend blindness is your failing. God's will has already been done, we are just crossing the t's and dotting the i's. And, choosing for the hereafter. That, ultimately, is the only choice we have.

Still, a bad man doing a good thing for his own reasons is not doing a good thing. Nor even a good man doing a good thing for his own reasons makes a deed good or bad. How was it put? Ah, a good deed must be intended as such, must be carried out rightly, and must also succeed. All other deeds are pavement stones on the highway to hell. If that hurts your feelings, adjust your feelings. I beg you.

Doom, I am not making the case for anyone's goodness or badness. That is between them and the Lord.

In Judaism, there are different levels of good deeds. Anonymous charity that is not asked for is the highest level of charity. But even charity done badly, after a direct request, for the wrong reasons is a good deed. Only at a lower level of goodness.
