Plant a vegetable garden, go to jail?

A woman in Michigan faces 93 days of jail time for replanting her front yard with vegetable planting beds after it was torn up for a sewer replacement project. She is standing up for her property rights, demanding a jury trial, and the city of Oak Park is throwing the book at her.
I used to watch the show Victory Garden on PBS on weekend morning. The traditional Victory Garden was planted in WWI or WWII in back and front yards as a way to ease pressure on the food supply and to help the war effort. Is it me or is the boot of government falling too heavily on our necks nowadays.
One commenter recommended that she should plant bamboo if forced to replant her yard. That'll teach those complaining neighbors!
Another thing. With all the blight in Detroit nowadays, the city spends their time harassing THIS WOMAN?

I just read this article. How DUMB can city officials get? I think this family has a grand lawsuit against the city. Just grand.

Interesting thought since bamboo is technically a grass...

This is over the top CRAZY!!!

I have strawberries in my front yard...if they caught me, would that just be probation?? LOL!!! I can't believe Detroit Police even wasted their time on such a ridiculous...I don't even know what to call it...landscaping crime???

We'll all have to resort to planting our own "victory gardens" if the food prices keep rising.
I hope she gets her day in court and the jury has more common sense than the city.

I didn't see whether the sewer work was her choosing or city work, nor if city work whether there was any reimbursement for replanting (possibly with stipulations, if so)?

I don't know, but I love her front yard! I might prefer the garden out back, but if someone was to dig the front yard up for free, I might go with that.

Wow, I thought the "Illegal storage of rain water" case was bizarre and extreme abuse of power. Now we can't plant our own organic food in the front yard? What about the back? Are roses OK? Why are we asking these question to grow these plants on our own property? When did we move to the Soviet Union or Mao's China? Seems like the government, though Detroit has the some of the worse, most racist and socialist local government in the country, is trying to use food as the mean to control and, if necessary, punish people. Heck in CA, there's an attempt, and it may pass, to basically ban meat, animal products and pet ownership. So nothing our tyrannical socialists, aka democrats, do surprises me anymore.

Madmath had a great comment. If they'd been roses, would she have been able to dodge the $93,000 fine? Is there a Plant Czar in that town who defines what can and can not be planted in a front yard?

OK, lady... this is the police. Put down the trowel. Put down the turnip. Place your hands on your head. Turn around slowly and don't do anything foolish.

I've never heard of such legislation on the books. This kind of thing has always been restricted to Fascist loving HOA neighborhoods. I could easily be wrong.

I hope she takes it to the SC.

You know freedom isn't always pretty, but it feels so good when you have it.

I think everyone should plant some vegetables in the front yard in protest.

I was appalled when I read about this too! These jackbooted thugs won't be happy until they control EVERY tiny aspect of our lives.

I sure hope she wins her court case, but with the stupid juries running around now days, I won't hold my breath.
