Obama Wins Nobel Peace Prize!

Alright. OK. Gimme a moment to let this settle in. I wonder what Saturday Night Live will have to say about this. I mean, isn't it a slap in the face to THEM? They just got through calling Obama a "do nothing" president, and ridiculing him for accomplishing "nothing" so far. And that nomination deadline was FEBRUARY 1st???? There is something rotten in Denmark (Sweden, Norway). The comments on the Fox News article are amusing.

Here is one, probably a conservative:
They have GOT to be kidding. The committee has to be on drugs or paid alot of money. Obama has only traveled abroard and put down America at every chance he gets? Obama has done nothing but promote the Muslims. Are we so lost that this happens. I could cry. I am already stressed out and now this. God help us.

Here is one who sees racism:
Great , Now we have affirmative action Nobel prizes. I thought these awards were based on accomplishments not personalities.

Here is one who sees greatness:
Congratulations Barrack Obama. The promise of what you represent cannot be denied. The world sees your greatness even if the opposition here at home refuses to. Hennepin County Liberal Examiner

Here is one who sees a destroyer:
obama has done nothing to warrant this supposed award. he will be known as the president who destroyed the American economy and health care system. let's have a look at the recent winners - gore and carter - what an lame group. gore the inventor of the internet and the fake global warming. carter the racist in sheep clothing.

Here is one who sees hateful neocons:
Great day for america...just goes to show you how much of you neocons are blinded by ha.te for president obama.

Here is one doubting the Nobel Committee:
What a disappointment! Obama has accomplished nothing. In fact, he's created more division and poverty than any US president in history. The award is proof positive the Nobel Peace Prize is a political b.ooby prize traded between s.ocial.ists.

Here is one who burst into song:
Are you frekin kidding me? The Nobel Peace Prize? Barack Hussien Obama. Mmmm Mmmmm Mmmmm.

Here is one who feels a little sick:
For the next week we arre going to see the right pick apart the Nobel Peace Prize and show what a farce it is. After all, 3 Democrats have won it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Starting with me. I have no respect for the committee who gave this turd the prize. His head and his ears are already big enough! It's a joke. They probably would have given it to Hitler for uniting the world. Ya for bleeding-heart Democrats. That just goes to show what a worthless prize it really is. It's spelled "are" not arre. (Unless you are a pirate.) Today, I vomit on the Nobel Peace Prize and it's committee. It's a sad state of affairs when someone like Nobama wins the prize.

Here is one who is willing to pay the shipping:
WOW! That's the biggest crock of s-h-i-t I've ever heard. If the rest of the world wants obama, they can have him today...I'll even pay shipping costs.

Here is one who sees a rush to judgement:
Wait. What did he do? How can anyone get a Nobel Peace Prize for two hundred days worth of getting their toes in the water? Come on folks, at least have the decency to wait a year before pretending... Nothing has happened yet! Well Obama did extend the Patriot act. He did extend the Wire tapping previsions. He did extend our presence in Iraq for another open ended term... Basically he's rubber stamped all the executive orders of the last administration. So that's what it takes to get a Nobel Peace Prize... Who knew?

OSLO -- President Barack Obama won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples," the Norwegian Nobel Committee said, citing his outreach to the Muslim world and attempts to curb nuclear proliferation.

The stunning choice made Obama the third sitting U.S. president to win the Nobel Peace Prize and shocked Nobel observers because Obama took office less than two weeks before the Feb. 1 nomination deadline. Obama's name had been mentioned in speculation before the award but many Nobel watchers believed it was too early to award the president.

"Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," the committee said. "His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population."

The committee said it attached special importance to Obama's vision of, and work for, a world without nuclear weapons.

"Obama has as president created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play," the committee said.

Theodore Roosevelt won the award in 1906 and Woodrow Wilson won in 1919. Former President Jimmy Carter won the award in 2002, while former Vice President Al Gore shared the 2007 prize with the U.N. panel on climate change.
More here.

I am still rather speechless. Dumbstruck. You could knock me over with a feather.

I really thought it was a joke. But looking at some of the people who have won it I guess it should not be. He had been in office for 12 days when he was nominated?

Hmm, peace prize. Isn't this country even more divided now? Maybe that is just me.

LL said...

When I saw the headline this morning, I thought it was an Internet Hoax - but a bad one because it couldn't possibly be true. The Nobel Committee nominations have to be in by February 1. So he was in office TEN DAYS and his award was based on ten frigging days as president?

Then I looked again and it must be true. The Chicago machine must have paid somebody off somewhere. Bribes work. I can't imagine ANY legitimate reason to give Obama any sort of award. His presidency has been marked by severe corruption of the sort not seen since the Warren Harding Administration, and a sort of mean-spirited approach to all opposition. I can't see that he united the country. In fact, He (his name be praised mmm.mmm.mmm) has been the most polarizing influence in America in my memory.

It's a sad satire - a farce - I'm dumbstruck too.

Obama gets the Nobel Prize? OPUS: please quit trying to steal my blog idea! I like you, you seem like a nice lady, but I do the satire, you do the news. I'm sugar, you're spice. Get it? I work really hard over there trying to lampoon the left, using multi-media and trying to come up with new ideas, and then you come along with your big bad "Obama wins a prize" story and think you can just sweep me under the rug, as if I don't even matter. This means war...

Fuzzy Slippers said...

I just heard about and blogged this, too, what a friggin' joke. I cannot believe that he is awarded this on the basis of . . . what? Blather and bloated ego?

Whatever hope anyone had that the Copenhagen fiasco would bring him down to earth is dead.

Personally, I think the Nobel committee just "voted" on what they think BO should do about McChrystal's request for more troops.

Rotti said...

The narcissist just got more food to feed on. Who on earth pays these people that make those call?

Of course the comments on fox news would seem amusing to you, it is Fox news. Why not venture out and find another more independent source and read the comments there... you may see a wider range of views on the subject. hmmmm.
And your initial reaction is what this would mean for SNL? Geez... I am sure the panel in OSLO, NORWAY took that into consideration!!!
Sorry, just my gut reaction to your (as usual) one-sided, close-minded post.
I do however agree that this a pure political decision. They want to underscore Obama's efforts for peace on the international stage, maybe even force him into a tough decision on what to do about Afghanistan... it will be difficult for him to wage a full war there, or even bomb Iran's nuclear facility. If he is smart - and I do believe he is - he will not let this influence his future policy decisions. A prize is just that, but foreign policy decisions are too important for him to ignore.

Obama Wins Nobel Peace Prize!'' For what??

Amanda said...

For your entertainment here are some views from the other side:

This one is just funny:
Relax. The committee will revoke the Peace Prize, as soon as they here that we've bombed the moon...

Why can't the[the right] join in celebrating that the young leader of America during a very critical period and who was voted in by Americans..... won the nobel peace prize? it says alot about America and Americans more than just the Prez.

If they [Fox news]cover it and bad mouth their own President and the Nobel Peace Prize itself, they just diminish respect for their espoused causes and for the USA in the eyes of many Americans and in the eyes of the world.
And in doing so strengthen the PR powers of anti-American organizations like al-Queda.

What a great honor. And some repubs among us will be really miffed. And that's ok too.
Yet, I can't help but wonder if one can gracefully decline this award.
At this point in his career and his tenure, I fear that such an honor for our President might be more of a burden.

Ya know the GOP is gonna have to GET WITH THE PROGRAM, they've NEVER has a US president who won this prize.
Now you can just bet they'll be whining no end, helped by the RWNM.
I guess if there was a Nobel for whining and snark they might get nominated.

The award was given to the President as the LEADER OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. The Nobel Committee is awarding the Prize to our nation for turning away from the primitive and brutal politics of the Bush administration.

Fuzzy Slippers said...

Candle, hilarious as always!

Are dems really claiming that no republican president has won the Nobel? geez, they're morons. But what can you expect from brainwashed, glassy-eyed, ill-informed people who pray to and sing songs of worship and praise to a man? *shrug* Okay, so Teddy Roosevelt wasn't a republican. Nothing like rewriting history to "prove" your point. Again.

Two key White House aides were both convinced they were being punked when they heard the news, reported ABC News' George Stephanopoulos.

"It's not April 1, is it?" one said.

Upon being called by ABC News at 5:45 ET this morning, a White House aide said, "This better be good."

When told by ABC News that the president had won the Nobel Peace Prize, the aide replied: "Oh, that is good." --ABCnews.go.com
&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

See, Amanda? Even the WHITE HOUSE STAFF thought this was a JOKE. Don't be so hard on me. And anyway, I included comments from both sides in my article, not just conservatives. But go ahead. Gloat. Every dog has his day, and this one goes to Obama, for sure.

Amanda: did you know that Gandhi never won the prize? He was nominated 5 times and never got it. He just wasn't peaceful enough I guess. But hey, Obama is going to weaken the US by reducing our influence in the world, playing nice with dictators (themselves a growing influence in the world). Ironically, they are giving him a peace prize for doing things that can only lead to more wars, terrorist attacks, and possibly nuclear ones at that. I'll stick with Fox news, you stick with Obama-news (and don't forget to pick up your Obama dollars!).

Opus #6 said...

JACG, it really is odd. That is for sure.

Just a conservative girl said...

Amanda what do you know about the person he beat out? His name is Morgan Tsvangirai. He has beaten and arrested trying to bring peace to Zimbabwe. A country that lives under the rule of Robert Mugabe; a brutal dicator and murderer.

Tsvangirai's wife was killed in car accident that seems to be an attempt on his life. He has spent his entire life trying to improve the conditions for people in his country that suffer things that as Americans we can't and I pray will never understand.

Obama does not deserve this. Read about Tsvangirai's life and come back and tell me that you think that Obama deserves this honor compared to this man.

He is person who risked his life for peace and stability. Not someone who simply won an election and has yet to accomplish anything remotely close to peace.

Amanda said...

Opus, clearly I am not gloating! My first post was actually critical of the decision... The quotes were posted to show there is another side to the story that you may be unaware of.

Anyways, your citation of ABC news just goes to disprove your theory of Obama being a narcissist! Think about it!! A narcissist would immediately accept the prize as a given, something expected without question!!!!

Also about this February 1st argument, I happen to be watching fox news just now - for some reason I want to know how they react to this. I was actually pleasantly surprised just now!!! Chris Wallace was being interviewed and was asked about the issue of Obama having been nominated on Feb 1st, not even 2 weeks into office. He said that this is not very remarkable since tons of people are allowed to nominate a person for the prize. Not a select group!!! AND, Chris Wallace said, almost every year someone happens to nominate the president of the united states is nominated, meaning that it is insignificant that Obama was nominated in the first place. Actual deliberations on whom they were going to give the prize were conducted during the summer, long after he had done some work towards peace! THIS ALL FROM Chris Wallace... If possible I will back this up with video, once it is posted to the internet somewhere!

Bungalow Bill said...

Is this not the biggest joke ever. I couldn't even believe it when I opened up the news today. I feel my swine flu coming back. It's sickening.

Fuzzy Slippers said...

Amanda, what "work has he done towards peace"? Really? Waffling about how to pursue his "good war," ignoring his hand-picked general (they spoke once in 70 days!), or allowing Iran to run roughshod over us and Israel? Really, I'm curious, in your world, what do people say that he's actually accomplished to earn this Nobel Peace Prize?

Candle said...

I'm going to take you by surprise...and make you realize, Amanda...

Opus #6 said...

LL, a farce indeed. I heard just now on the radio the sound bite of the announcement in Oslo. The people in the room sounded like they had all been punched in the guy in unison. It was not a happy noise. Maybe the committee had reasons for this, but Europeans at large do not think this is appropriate.

Opus #6 said...

Candle, you have that all wrong. I'm sugar, you're spice. OK, sugar?

Opus #6 said...

Fuzzy slippers, OMGosh. I think you channeled Rush LImbaugh before his program. Because that is EXACTLY what he just said. He thinks that this award was given to make sure Obama does not increase troop levels in Afghanistan. I mean, what Nobel Peace Laureate could do a thing like that!

Opus #6 said...

Rotti, Rush also said Obama's head is now so big that his ears are starting to look normal. But I would never say something like that. Yeesh!

Opus #6 said...

Amanda, SNL has a LOT of explaining to do, imo.

Opus #6 said...

Dr. Dave, I expect you to get over your speechlessness soon and give me some SNARK!

Opus #6 said...

Wo, for what? That is the big question. I actually think Amanda has it right in this part of her comment: "I do however agree that this a pure political decision. A prize is just that, but foreign policy decisions are too important for him to ignore."

Bravo, Amanda. I too hope Obama thinks like an American while acting as our president, and not King of the Universe.

Opus #6 said...

Odie, the bleep censors went crazy just now. What was that you said?

Opus #6 said...

Candle, that was the point I thought about just now as I was dropping off my kids at school. I have never felt closer to World War 3 as I do right now. And that deserves a peace prize???

PEACE THROUGH STRENGTH. That was Reagan's motto. That won the Cold War. That is what works in this world full of crazy, violent, greedy people.

Opus #6 said...

Amanda, no problem. I believe you about the Chris Wallace stuff. ABC news said Obama's STAFF thought they were being punked. That was the story.

When I went back and read your comment, after being fully awake here on West Coast time, I realized I agreed with it. See my comment back to Wofat. So truce, OK?

Opus #6 said...

JACG, you are right. Deserving people have been passed over for an unproven neophyte. So sad.

Amanda said...

Examples (whether you agree with the politics behind these decisions or not, they DO reflect an administration that is working toward peace rather than fear-mongering and war!):

1) cutting our nuclear arsenal and speaking up for ending nuclear proliferation
2) denying missile defense systems for Poland and the Czech republic
3) executive order to close Guantanamo bay

The reason behind the decision is as the committee stated:
"Obama has as President created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play. Dialogue and negotiations are preferred as instruments for resolving even the most difficult international conflicts. The vision of a world free from nuclear arms has powerfully stimulated disarmament and arms control negotiations. Thanks to Obama's initiative, the USA is now playing a more constructive role in meeting the great climatic challenges the world is confronting. Democracy and human rights are to be strengthened."

Opus #6 said...

Opus #6 said...

Amanda, this is where we differ. Those 3 things you listed, imo, push this country FARTHER toward the brink of war, not away. Peace Through Strength is how countries keep their people safe. This is not a namby pamby world we live in. There are people out there, ruthless, greedy people, who want YOUR STUFF. In olden times, families risked their homes being overrun by marauders, the husband being killed, and the women and children being carted off and enslaved. Sure, we live in "modern" times. But this does not change the nature of man.

If the US lays down arms, bad experiences will come our way. You've gotta trust me on that.

Opus #6 said...

I'm still in shock, Opie! Those gasps could be heard for 50 miles! There might be something to the comments that they gave him this "prize" to force his hand about not sending more troops!
After all, how can someone so wonderful who just won the "peace" prize, send in more warriors?

It's all fixed anyway...they nominated him 11 DAYS after he took office! I am officially claiming my slogan WORSE EVERY DAY!

Fuzzy Slippers said...

Amanda, Opus is right. I mean, do you think that it's rational to deny the Holocaust? Or to believe that Israel and all Jewish people should be wiped from the face of the earth and the pages of history? Did you think that Ahmadinejad's U.N. speech was balanced, rational, even coherent? This is what you have to understand, what BO has to understand, you cannot make diplomatic peace with unbalanced and unstable persons who are known to lie (about their nuclear capabilities and testing). Look at how many promises this type of megalomaniac despot has broken throughout history. Do you really want to trust the world's safety on promises alone? Do you really think that there is any chance of reasoned discourse with, let alone his holding up his end of the bargain, someone who is that dedicated to his own worldview (in which Israel, as mentioned, needs to be destroyed and America is the evil capitalist giant who needs to be obliterated because we have caused all the world's problems-that's not even logical, but it's what he believes).

As Opus says, peace through strength--walking softly and carrying a big stick that you don't *want* to use but would--is the only type of "reason" he can possibly understand. Because as it stands now, our strength is the only thing that is keeping any type of peace at all over there (and the only thing keeping Russia from rolling over its former satellites, Chavez and others conquering nations). Don't you understand that?

Candle, Amanda gets a free pass on my blog. She and I go back to 2005. She is one of my mommy blogging buddies, from our breastfeeding forum days. She was a stalwart friend to me for years, literally taking my pregnancy test pictures and cropping them/darkening them to try to help me see if I was pregnant or hallucinating. It was only after I started blogging politically this last year that we discovered that I was the far-right-winger and she was the far-left-winger of that group. She sees it as her sacred duty to set me straight. ;-) Which is fine. Like I said, her comments give me an opportunity to espouse my beliefs, and she works well on my blog.

Her own blog is a sweet little family blog, about kids and pets. Best not to go there.

I like this grown up approach you have to debating with liberals. But there are libs and there are libs. Your friend seems like a normal person who thinks, but when you get "I bet you still eat Freedom Fries" and "Stop being brainwashed by Fox News" as "arguments," it all falls apart. For these simps, there is nothing that can be said; they are usually completely clueless about what is going on and have no reasonable response (or they wouldn't be waving Freedom Fries around like that, with ketchup splattering all over the place. So undignified.).
