First They Came for Fox News-NewsBusters

by Claudia Rosett. You don’t have to love Fox News to see how dangerous it is when the President of the United States gives his staff and advisers a green light to single out and denigrate by name a specific news organization. As we surely all know by now, this is what the White House has been doing to Fox.

The Sunday morning talk shows just brought us White House Senior Adviser David Axelrod opining to George Stephanopoulos, on ABC’s “This Week,” that Fox is “Really – not news — it’s pushing a point of view.” Axelrod advised that ABC and other non-Fox outlets take his cue and expunge Fox from the brethren of news services: “And the bigger thing is that other news organizations like yours ought not to treat them that way, and we’re not going to treat them that way.” Meanwhile, on CNN’s “State of the Union,” White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel was hammering home the same message, that Fox “is not a news organization so much as it has a perspective,” and urging “More importantly is not have [sic] the CNNs and the others in the world basically be led in following Fox, as if what they’re trying to do is a legitimate news organization… .”

This would be a very good moment for all those other news organizations — CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS, the newspapers and the news web sites – to offer President Obama the perspective that it is utterly inappropriate for White House personnel to be opining publicly on the overall fitness of specific news outlets. The president has sworn to “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.” That includes protecting free speech, not dispatching White House staff and advisers to hold forth publicly as media critics denouncing news outlets they don’t like.

And Fox's ratings have increased since the attack.

When Barry made that pledge he had his fingers crossed as a caveat for his Chicago cronies to run amock.

I hear the numbers of viewers of FOX News has gone up since this anti-FOX blitz was started. People are tuning in to see what all the hub-bub is all about ... OOPS!

As long as they can get it out there that fox "is not news" (in their words), they can later lump them in with Limbaugh and Ingram and other radio folks so that they can be swept away under the new Fairness Doctrine Thing that they cook up. But first...it has to be re-labled as "not news".

Great title, great article. Part of this attack involves a clear warning to the fringe media not to drop the propaganda spewing in favor of improving their ratings by providing the consumer with actual news or (gasp) investigative journalism, so the threat to free speech is multi-layered and exponentially dangerous.

They just can't take a little criticism...how embarrassing!

The mainstream media seems to spend lots of time lip polishing Obama's booty. I guess they think "news" is the name of someone's pet dog.

WHT, they will have to work a little harder if they want to take away my free speech. That is kind of the crux of this whole blogging and patriotic movement. Freedoms need to be exercised or they can atrophy.

Bill, that goes along with the old axiom, there is no such thing as bad publicity. Rhe more they cry about Fox, the stronger Fox becomes.

I have never seen such a bunch of damn whiners before. Obama has such a big ego that he can't handle any type of criticism, period. At least Fox News is benefiting from these baseless attacks.

Odie, Opus, same thing happened with Rush; people tuning in to see whas up.

Makes you wonder if it's intentional, because after the first time you 'screw the pooch', any additional times simply magnify your incompetence.

Shakin my head.

Red, he certainly gives the Chicago thugs a free rein.

Odie, I can hear them in the white house now. Darn it! When can we squash those Fox people!

And the reporters of the Main Stream haven't been caught lying about any of their stories?
What about the female reporter Bill O'Riley interviewed? She said after Bill caught her in a fictitious story: Well, we are not held to telling the truth- the readers have to find the facts for themselves.
And then there is the reporter who told about some actual conflict, stating that he saw it himself---later it was exposed he was not even there!

Candle, freeze and isolate the opponent. Alinsky style.

Fuzzy Slippers, I am hoping that this type of naked media attack will shame the left wing media into doing their job a little better.

I love being right, totally!

Wo, er, yes. They play at being journalists. They give real journalists a bad name.

Teresa, I love how you say it like it is. Bunch of damn whiners is right. Go Fox News!!!!

I'm relieved to hear my moment of literary weakness has been soothed.

The hummingbird picture zooms nicely in case there is any remaining discomfort.
