The Harry Potter Incentive

Getting boys to *love* reading can be a tricky business. Having the Harry Potter series in the house makes it easier. The most crucial time is the mid-grade-school years. If kids don't develop a love of reading by then, it may never happen. Enter Harry Potter. I have read this entire series to my 10-year-old boy already, and he asked me to start it again. But this time he began reading ahead. I come back for the next evening's bedtime story and we have skipped 3 chapters. I can't describe the feeling of exultation that this brings. Like watching a child swim across the pool alone, or wobble on their first solo bike ride. When a child reads for pleasure, and not because it is an assignment, a huge chasm has been crossed. And this affects the child's future. The best writers I know are people who love books.

My older kids are devouring Harry Potter right now. It's great to see them choosing to sit down and read.:)

My wife and I are big Harry Potter fans. First the books, then the movies.

I hold my breath when my kids ask to read, it makes me so happy. I had a very hard time learning to read and I want them to love it.

I just convinced my 10 year old to give HP a go and she can't put the book down. I love Harry!

I wish i could get the time in my life to read. And when I suggest it to the kids, the eye rolling and sighing begin. It's not like I've asked them to write a thesis, just read one. Happy VGNO

I love seeing my little guy read, but he's much, much younger and loves picture books so far. I sure hope he continues his love of reading, it's one of my personal favorite hobbies. It's so fulfilling! :)

Three cheers for you Mom. My older son is in Kindergarten, and I just introduced him to chapter books this summer. He is so excited to be read to at night. I can't wait until he starts reading ahead. I hope he always has a love for reading.
Happy VGNO!

I am completely with you on this! My son was very uninterested in reading and at age 7 we got him into the Famous Five / Secret Seven books by Enid Blyton. They were adventurous but aimed at children and he loved them. He is now a great reader - whilst not avid like his parents - there is nothing to worry about anymore and he occasionally picks up a book to read purely for enjoyment.
